Payments through this project are based upon the adopted conservation practices, acreage, estimated reductions in phosphorus and sediment loading to streams, and other incentives.

The results from this tool can be utilized to get an estimated overall payment for your conservation plan.

The table below lists the current base payment rates for eligible conservation practices. Practices that are no longer available are
The rates below were updated on 8/6/2021 to reflect 2021 EQIP rates.
Practice Description Payment ($/acre)
Conservation Crop Rotation Add wheat or small grain to the rotation that has not been part of the rotation for the past 5 years or more (followed by a multi-species mix cover crop which can be contracted for separately). $9.84
Cover Crop Plant an over-wintering cover crop single species. $52.17
Cover Crop Plant a multiple species mix with at least one over-wintering species. $52.17
Residue and Tillage Management, No-till On fields with less than 30% residue coverage, plant crops using no-till methods that result in at least 60% residue coverage after planting. $16.42
Residue and Tillage Management, Reduced till On fields with less than 30% residue coverage, plant crops using methods that result in at least 30% residue coverage after planting. $14.59
Filter Strip Native species. $183.81
Filter Strip Introduced species. $128.29
Filter Strip Native species, forgone income. $449.69
Filter Strip Introduced species, forgone income. $394.18

This tool supports the goals of Michigan State University's Institute of Water Research (IWR) project Accelerating Conservation Adoption in the River Raisin. The project is funded by the Environmental Protection Agency’s Great Lakes Restoration Initiative.

The tool allows users to digitize field boundaries in the watershed, describe the agricultural operations on the field(s), view modeled estimates of nutrient runoff, and evaluate potential incentive payments for adopting conservation practices.

Modeled estimates were produced through the Soil and Water Assessment Tool (SWAT) by researchers at the Graham Sustainability Institute at the University of Michigan (UM) and the Department of Food, Agricultural, and Biological Engineering at Ohio State University (OSU). This online tool was developed by IWR-MSU, and is part of the Great Lakes Watershed Management System toolkit.
