Buffers

A buffer, in spatial information systems, is a polygon enclosing an area within specified distance from a point, line, or polygon.

With the ability to apply buffer areas around any given feature, the Geographic Information System offers an important tool. The primary application of the buffer function applies in situations in which it is desired to establish increasingly or decreasingly valued zones around specific features. For example, it may be necessary to place increasingly strict land use zones around environmentally sensitive areas.
